Basement finishing typically runs $30 to $75 per square foot depending on scope, so a 700 square foot basement often lands between $21,000 and $52,000. Adding a bathroom, wet bar or egress window pushes the project toward the higher end of that range.

Why homeowners choose us for basement
- Framing, electrical, plumbing, painting and flooring handled by one coordinated crew
- Built to Massachusetts building and egress code from the start, not retrofitted later
- We pull the permit and manage inspections so you never have to call your town hall
- Moisture and foundation issues are flagged during the free estimate, not discovered mid-project
A basement remodeling contractor turns an unfinished or outdated basement into legal living space. That means checking for moisture, framing and insulating the walls, running electrical and plumbing, adding egress where a bedroom is planned, then drywall, ceiling, flooring and paint, with a permit and inspections along the way. Mr. Gomes Remodeling handles every step for homeowners across Central Massachusetts, with one point of contact from estimate to final walkthrough.
Basement finishing vs. basement remodeling
People use the words interchangeably, but the starting point is different. We do both.
| Basement finishing | Basement remodeling or renovation | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Bare foundation walls, open joists, concrete floor | An older finished basement: paneling, carpet, drop ceiling |
| Typical work | Moisture check, framing, insulation, electrical, drywall, ceiling, flooring | Demo, new layout, lighting, flooring, often a bathroom or bedroom added |
| Permit | Needed to turn the space into livable rooms | Needed when adding plumbing, electrical or a bedroom |
| Biggest risk | Finishing over a moisture problem | Hidden damage behind old walls |

Massachusetts Code
What a finished basement needs to pass inspection in Massachusetts
- A building permit. Turning a basement into livable space almost always requires one in Massachusetts. We pull it and meet the inspector on site.
- Egress in every bedroom. Bob Vila, citing the International Residential Code, lists the minimums: 20 inches wide, 24 inches high, 5.7 square feet of net clear opening and a sill no higher than 44 inches.
- A proper window well. At least 9 square feet of floor space, 36 inches in each direction, and a permanent ladder or steps when deeper than 44 inches.
- Dry walls and floor first. We check for dampness, efflorescence and drainage problems during the estimate and never finish over an unresolved moisture issue.
Rules can vary by town, so we confirm requirements with your local building department before work starts. Read more in our Massachusetts permit guide.

FAQ
Basement questions Massachusetts homeowners ask
How much does it cost to finish a basement in Massachusetts?
Basement finishing typically runs $30 to $75 per square foot depending on scope. A 700 square foot basement often lands between $21,000 and $52,000. Adding a full bathroom or egress window adds to that range. We give you a fixed number in writing after measuring your space.
Do I need a permit to finish a basement in Massachusetts?
Yes. Finishing a basement into livable space almost always requires a building permit in Massachusetts, and adding a bedroom requires an egress window or door. We pull the permit and manage the inspection process as part of every project.
How long does a basement remodel take?
A straightforward basement finish (framing, electrical, drywall, flooring) typically takes 3 to 6 weeks. Projects that add a full bathroom, wet bar or address moisture issues can run longer. We give you a written schedule before work starts.
What do you do if the basement has a moisture problem?
We check for moisture and foundation issues during the free estimate, before we price the job. If we find a problem, we explain it in plain terms, quote the fix separately, and only proceed with your approval. We do not finish over an unresolved moisture issue.
Can you add a bathroom or wet bar to a basement remodel?
Yes, both are common additions. They require plumbing rough-in, which we coordinate as part of the project, and a permit, which we handle for you.
What is the difference between basement finishing and basement remodeling?
Finishing turns a bare, unfinished basement into living space: framing, insulation, electrical, drywall, ceiling and flooring. Remodeling updates a basement that was finished before, usually with demo, a new layout, lighting and flooring. We do both, with the same permit and inspection process.
Can a finished basement have a legal bedroom in Massachusetts?
Yes, if the bedroom has an emergency escape opening. Bob Vila, citing the International Residential Code, lists a minimum of 5.7 square feet of net clear opening, 20 inches wide, 24 inches high, with the sill no higher than 44 inches. We plan the egress window before the layout and confirm the rules with your town.
Do you subcontract basement work?
Framing, drywall, finish carpentry and flooring are done by our in-house crew. Licensed electricians and plumbers we work with regularly handle the wiring and plumbing, scheduled and supervised by us, so you still have one point of contact.
Which towns do you serve for basement finishing?
We finish and remodel basements throughout Central Massachusetts, including Northborough, Worcester, Framingham, Marlborough, Shrewsbury, Westborough, Hudson, Southborough and Hopkinton. If you are nearby and not listed, call us at (508) 304-3447.
