Bathroom and Home Remodel in Marlborough, MA: One Year Later

Dioclecio Gomes, founder of Mr. Gomes Remodeling

This is one of the Marlborough homes we remodeled room by room: three bathrooms (the primary bathroom, the main bathroom and a powder room with laundry), plus the staircase, hardwood floors and fireplace. A year later I went back, and the work still looks the way we left it.

Primary bathroom remodel in Marlborough: soaking tub and walk-in shower

This was the biggest room of the job. The old primary bathroom had a built-in jetted tub in the corner and a vanity along the wall. We changed the layout, moved the plumbing and electrical, waterproofed and tiled a walk-in shower with niches, and set a freestanding soaking tub under the windows. Warm wood cabinetry on the double vanity balances the gray tile and the high ceiling. Choosing a tub? Our acrylic vs. cast iron vs. fiberglass bathtub guide compares the options.

Main bathroom remodel: tub-to-shower with a double vanity

The main bathroom had a tub with a shower curtain and a single long vanity. We replaced the tub with a tiled shower behind glass doors, and put in a wood double vanity with two mirrors and wall lights and new flooring. Plumbing and electrical were updated, and the shower was waterproofed before any tile went up. For sizing a shower like this one, see our standard shower sizes guide.

Powder room and laundry remodel: the teal room from New England Living

This small room does two jobs, so every inch had to work. We added teal wall paneling, a wood vanity under an arched mirror with wall lights, and patterned tile on the floor, and built cabinetry around the stacked washer and dryer with a work surface next to it. This is the room that made the magazine: it was featured in New England Living (2025, Issue 1) in Lisa Cavanaugh's article "Awash in Color" on color drenching. The design was by Lauren Dworak and Jean Grace of the Kohler Store in Natick, and our crew built it.

Staircase, hardwood flooring and fireplace refresh

The last part tied the house together. We installed hardwood flooring, refreshed the staircase with wood treads, white balusters and a black railing, added white wall paneling, and painted the fireplace and gave it a wood mantel. Before the new floors went in, we made the floor support repairs the house needed, then finished with new baseboards and paint. Weighing floors for your own house? Our hardwood vs. carpet guide covers cost and value. We only have after photos of this part of the house.

What made this job hard

  • Moving plumbing and electrical in the primary bathroom to make room for a walk-in shower and a freestanding tub.
  • Waterproofing two showers properly before any tile, because that is what decides whether a shower still looks good years later.
  • Repairing floor support before laying hardwood, so the new floors stay flat and quiet.
  • Fitting a powder room and a full laundry into one small room without it feeling crowded.

What I'm proudest of

  • The primary bathroom: warm wood against gray tile under a high ceiling.
  • The teal powder room: a small room with a lot of character.
  • The staircase and floors, which make the whole house feel connected.
  • Going back a year later and seeing it all still look new.
